Convergence congratulates Mayra Flores on her historic victory in the special election for Texas’ 34th congressional district and is proud to have played a part in her decisive win. Flores will become the next member of Congress from the 34th district in Texas and will be the first woman born in Mexico elected to the U.S. House of Representatives.
“Mayra will be an effective and dynamic voice for the Rio Grande Valley in Congress,” said Convergence partner Mike Shields. “But her election means so much more than that. As a proud naturalized American citizen, Mayra’s story is America’s story. From working in cotton fields as a teenager to now becoming a member Congress representing the community she loves is an inspiring and emotional story. It was an honor to be able to share it with the voters of Texas.”
Mayra’s victory represents the first time a Republican has flipped a majority-Hispanic Democratic seat in the Rio Grande Valley in over 100 years. Texas’ 34th congressional district currently has the second largest Hispanic population of any district in America. Former Democratic Congressman Filemon Vela won the 34th district by 13 points in 2020. Joe Biden won TX-34 by 4.2% in 2020, Hillary Clinton won by 21.5% in 2016, and Barack Obama won by 22.1% in 2012.
